Cyprinids (Cyprinidae) with more than 93 confirmed species is the most diverse family among Iranian freshwater ichthyofauna having several complex groups such as Alurnoides bipunctatus. Alburnoides bipunctatus (Bloch, 1782) was the name applied to most populations of riffle minnows across Europe and the Middle East from France north of the Alps eastwards to the Black, Caspian and Aral Sea basins but ongoing research is revealing a greater diversity and presence of at least 6 species in Iran including Alburnoides qanati. This fish was described from a qanat in Kor river basin of Iran and was supposed to be restricted to this basin. However our extensive field works confirmed presence of A. qanati in the neighboring Sirjan River basin for the first time.
