Abstract

In the present study, effects of the ethanolic extract of the Punica granatum L. flowers on weight of body, liver and kidney, serum glucose level were investigated in streptozotocininduced diabetic rats. 40 rats were made diabetic using by streptozotocin (100mg/kg) interperitoneally. The ethanolic extract at doses 100, 150, 200 and 300mg/kg, were administered daily for 18 days, intraperitoneally. Blood samples were obtained from heart after 18 days. The control group was administered saline. The serum glucose level was measured by kit. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of Punica granatum significantly reduced the serum glucose levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. But, the extract did not affect on body weight of body, kidney and liver in comparison with diabetic control group. The present data indicates that extract of Punica granatum has hypoglycaemic effect in diabetic animals. So, this plant should be considered in future therapeutic researches.
